How expert are the mental health 'experts'?

A psychotherapist 'friend' of mine once said to me that my taxes go to pay for 'people like you'.
I replied if it wasn't for people like me, then you would not have a job to pay taxes.

Don't let greedy so called 'experts' motivated by money who have more interest in keeping you as a 'client', than encouraging you to better health, bully you at your most vulnerable.http: [-X

I agree. I was going to a chiroprator weekly who was giving me approx 3 minutes of his valuable time for £40. Needless to say I eventually decided he's having a laugh. They're all paid far too much, along with dentists, solicitors, mp's etc. I've always thought if they were fined for say a speeding or thieving offence it should sting as much as it does the ordinary person. Radical notion huh.. tim

Re: How expert are the mental health 'experts'?

It really does depend on the practitioner and the results. I'm a multi-disciplinary therapist and I know other practitioners who charge half of what I charge but get little success. Conversely, I know practitioners who charge double my fee and also get little success and many in between who get good results.

A couple of months back I completed a 9 week programme with a client who came to me for, smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, insomnia, work related stress, family issues and some weight issues. He has now quit cigarettes, drugs and alcohol, sleeps soundly through the night, has lost 9lb, is now self employed has doubled his income and has worked through his family stuff to a point where it no longer depresses him.

So, by his own reckoning he revealed that with his yearly savings of a minimum £10,000 from quitting smoking and abusing alcohol and drugs, plus his 100% increase in salary (approximately £45,000) that puts £50,000 minimum every year in his pocket! Not bad for an investment of £1,080!

Like I said it really does depend on the practitioner. And as you might guess, my clients don't outsmart me otherwise I wouldn't manage to achieve such results! I've also been around the block a time or two myself..!

yes BDT they sure are, have to be in order to help us :)) - Elaine in my experience in life I've learned that results only occur when a critical mass has gathered and that happens in the client, even before they come to your door, not to say you don't help people lots, you are there saying that it can be done and thats worth so much! - but most respect and koudos needs to go to the client, its their life force that is driving the whole thing (they may not even know this), its their sacrifice, its their heart and soul on the line - its their need that makes it happen. I have a soft spot for MH helpers as I believe they are probably very kind people usually.
